Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists

  • Adrienne De Guevara

    De Guevara combines self-taught and formal training in visual and performing arts attending Santa Barbara City College and Parsons School of Design. Her performance work has been presented in Santa Barbara, CA, San Francisco, CA, New York City, and Putney, VT. She co-founded Crux Productions, a theater and film production company in Brooklyn, NY, was co-creator of Mister Sister, an Avant Vaudeville comedy duo in NYC, front woman for Shakti Pops, an electronic-kirtan band, and worked as a director and lighting technician on projects in New York City and Vermont. In 2023 she was awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council. She is currently the Programs and Fund Development Officer for the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative and a collaborator at MISC Workshop.

  • Alfredo Avila

    Alfredo Avila is a Chicano activist, actor, educator, theater-maker, and award-winning independent documentary filmmaker from Inglewood, CA, with an MA in Applied Theatre Arts from USC. Since 2005, he has collaborated with El Teatro Campesino as an actor, producer, director and Migrant Education media teacher. His feature documentary ‘God’s Tenants’ (2018) won Best Documentary at the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival, and his short narrative film “Amiguin” was awarded Best Drama at the 2023 Poppy Jasper International Film Festival; he is the current recipient of The Center for Cultural Power's Culture Bearer grant award. Alfredo is an adjunct professor in the Theater & Cinema department at Hartnell College and serves as a teaching artist in state prison through the Alliance for California Traditional Arts organization. He currently serves as the Interim Executive Director at the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts in Salinas, CA.

  • Alicia Trujillo

    Alicia is the Operations Assistant for the non-profit Sol Treasures located in King City, CA. I have my AA in Computer Business Administration. Owner of Alicia + Marie Designs in which I personalized Arts & Crafts / Party Decorations. I volunteer on many levels in my community: KCHS FFA Booster Club, KCAM PTO, Girls Inc and other community events.

  • Charlie Rugg

    Charlie Rugg, a conceptual artist based in San Luis Obispo, California, specializes in abstract and figurative oil painting. His work explores the collective nature of human experience, emphasizing the interplay between shifting perspectives and the creation of new meaning. In his 2023 'And also' exhibition at Sloma, Rugg celebrates our instinct to construct existence through narrative, highlighting the ambiguity that emerges when stories intersect, both in figurative and abstract contexts.

    Originally from Boston, Rugg's first career in professional soccer took him to California, where he played for the LA Galaxy followed by two clubs in Germany. Maintaining a parallel passion for art, throughout his soccer career, Rugg transitioned to a focus on oil painting upon retiring from soccer.

  • Christy Sandoval

    A multidisciplinary artist, teatrista, arts administrator and artistic producer born and raised in Watsonville, Christy currently serves as Executive Director of El Teatro Campesino (ETC). She joined the company in 2007 and trained extensively in ETC’s ensemble practices before transitioning to the company’s leadership team in 2014 as Education Director, where she presided over a multi-year expansion of the company’s educational programming and curriculum development. In 2016-17, she led the ETC performing ensemble through a newly devised collective creation and theatrical museum experience called “Viva La Causa: A Teatro Retrospective.” An advocate of community-based practices promoting social change, Christy has designed and facilitated workshops for a wide range of communities and organizations, some of which include: Network for Ensemble Theaters’ MicroFest, Center Theater Group, the Western Stage, Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Clara Offices of Education, Cal Poly Arts, the University of California Santa Cruz, Gavilan Community College, Latinx Theater Alliance Los Angeles, and East Los Angeles College.

  • Diana Diaz

    Diana Diaz grew up in the Los Angeles area with a camera in her hand. She attended UCSB and Santa Barbara City College before obtaining a Master of Music in Opera Theater. She has directed and performed in opera, choirs, musicals, and plays. She continues working on photography as an art. She had her first solo show last fall and her photos have been featured in publications and art shows.

  • Doranda Martin

    Doranda Martin is the founder of The CreArtive Freedom Family (CFF), a creative exploratory and development "lab" where individuals can express themselves in various artistic ways such as diverse dance styles, sculpting, painting, drawing and more. The CFF supports the free and holistic well-being of the distinct individual through facilitating the exploration, discovery, examination, development, and ruthless exhibition of the divine identity through creativity. Doranda is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation.

  • Jenny Chang

    Jenny Chang is an artist living in San Luis Obispo who specializes in painting quirky animals and art inspired by nature. Originally, on the path of biological research, her love of art took over and she pursued her lifelong dream of becoming an artist. Her work started with small paintings, but over the pandemic she took her art outside and started painting windows for local businesses. Lately, she has been incorporating textiles, natural dyes and pressed flowers into her work. Jenny’s art is characterized by bright colors, natural motifs, and unique humor.

  • Kenji Lauren Tanner

    Born in Los Angeles, California, and raised by her Japanese and African American parents, Kenji was introduced at an early age to various cultures. Kenji’s rich ancestral experiences influenced her creative expression and blend of African, African-American, Japanese, and Native American-cultural themes to make powerful cross-cultural statements. She engages her audience regardless of ethnicity, gender, and generational affiliation. Kenj’s art deeply conveys a profound sense of spirituality, beauty, and deep messages that ignite the imagination.

    Her style is expressed with color, beads, movement, and texture. Her rare hand-beaded art collection is distinct “Kenji”. Her collectors are amazed at the patience and focus required to obtain such beauty.

    Kenji has been profiled in the Carmel Pine Cone newspaper, radio, and interviewed on television. She has been the artist in residence for the International Blues Festival for Monterey County, for 4 years. Kenji is certified with the UCLA Healing in the Arts and has worked with the Arts Council for Monterey County as the lead teaching artist in the schools for 20 years. She also taught and led art seminars in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District for eight years, where she continues to motivate students, teachers, and all who desire to tap into their creative abilities. During the pandemic, Kenji recorded several videos on YouTube and received over 30,000 views supporting students and teachers during a crucial time.

    Her work has been featured in several exhibitions, galleries, schools, and art venues where she has received numerous awards. Kenji’s love for the arts makes an imprint on everyone she touches.

  • Monica Galvan

    Monica Galvan grew up in Watsonville California. She comes from a biracial family with a Mexican father and mother of French European descent. Living in low income housing projects for the majority of her life, she learned about her Mexican culture and became aware of the racial inequities and discrimination faced by her Latinx neighbors. Her upbringing has kept her grounded. She honors her roots by sharing her passion for art with her community. In 2014 Monica transferred to UC Berkeley from Cabrillo College, receiving her Bachelors in art practice in the Spring of 2016. She received her Masters of Fine Art from San Jose State in the spring of 2023. Monica currently teaches art lessons in alternative education high schools and community centers in Santa Cruz County. She has been a practicing teaching artist in Watsonville for the past 6 years. In 2019 Monica founded a nonprofit called Arte del Corazón, an organization geared at securing and providing opportunities for financial advancement, professional development and community engagement for local artists and creatives of Watsonville, CA and the surrounding counties.

  • Summer Red

    Summer Red is the owner and lead producer of Sonivore Studio. A lifelong musician with proficiency and experience in multiple areas of the music world, Summer dedicates his focus to the pursuit of not only making great art but creating structures of holistic support for musicians both locally and beyond. Summer is the pioneer of the landmark program Solo Tracks which creates a pathway for musicians to develop their music alongside industry professionals while accessing networking opportunities for product placement and performance on post-production. As a curator Summer uses the medium of live events as a space to allow people to gather, connect, and analyze deeper cultural and personal truths. Summer is also an Event Coordinator on Staff at UCSC where he applies his skillets for culture building on campus locally with events to create a diverse and educational experience for students. He has worked alongside The Tannery, Arts Council, Central Coast Creative Corp., SC Arts Commission, Universal Audio, The MAH, and numerous other art-based entities to facilitate conversations around the importance of art in society and provide showcasing opportunities to artists across mediums. Summer’s overarching take on modern art centers on acknowledging its role in our lives as a tool for conveying truth, connecting us to ourselves and others more deeply, and helping evolve our consciousness and ways of being to coexist in a changing world.
